Practice Excerpt 2 with Prompts: from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

In the following excerpt I’ve used the [Spell That] tag. When you see it, say [Spell That] then [Cap] and spell the name, then say Choose [1,2,3,etc].

“[Open Quote][Cap]And what is a man that he should not run with his brothers?[Question Mark] ”[Close Quote] said Mowgli [Spell That].[Period] “[Open Quote] I was born in the jungle.[Period] I have obeyed the [Cap]Law of the [Cap]Jungle, [Comma] and there is no wolf of ours from whose paws I have not pulled a thorn.[Period] Surely they are my brothers![Exclamation Mark] ”[Close Quote] [New Line]

Bagheera[Spell That] stretched himself at full length and half shut his eyes.[Period] “[Open Quote][Cap]Little [Cap]Brother,[Comma] ”[Close Quote] said he,[Comma] “[Open Quote]feel under my jaw[Spell That].[Period] ”[Close Quote] [New Line]

Mowgli put up his strong brown hand,[Comma] and just under Bagheera's silky chin,[Comma] where the giant rolling muscles were all hid by the glossy hair,[Comma] he came upon a little bald spot.[Period] [New Line]

“[Open Quote][Cap]There is no one in the jungle that knows that I,[Comma] Bagheera,[Comma] carry that mark—[Dash]the mark of the collar[Spell That];[Semicolon] and yet,[Comma] [Cap]Little [Cap]Brother,[Comma] I was born among men,[Comma] and it was among men that my mother died—[Dash]in the cages of the king's palace at Oodeypore.[Period] It was because of this that I paid the price for thee at the [Cap]Council when thou wast a little naked cub.[Period] Yes,[Comma] I too was born among men.[Period] I had never seen the jungle.[Period] They fed me behind bars from an iron pan till one night I felt that I was Bagheera—[Dash] the [Cap]Panther—[Dash]and no man's plaything,[Comma] and I broke the silly lock with one blow of my paw and came away.[Period] And because I had learned the ways of men,[Comma] I became more terrible in the jungle than Shere Khan[Spell That].[Period] Is it not so?[Question Mark] ”[Close Quote] [New Line]

“[Open Quote]Yes, [Comma]”[Close Quote] said Mowgli,[Comma] “[Open Quote]all the jungle fear Bagheera—[Dash]all except Mowgli. [Period]”[Close Quote] [New Line]

“[Open Quote]Oh,[Comma] thou art a man's cub, [Comma]”[Close Quote] said the [Cap]Black [Cap]Panther very tenderly.[Period] “[Open Quote]And even as I returned to my jungle,[Comma] so thou must go back to men at last—[Dash]to the men who are thy brothers—[Dash]if thou art not killed in the [Cap]Council. [Period]”[Close Quote] [New Line]

“[Open Quote]But why—[Dash]but why should any wish to kill me?[Question Mark] ”[Close Quote] said Mowgli.[Period] [New Line]

“[Open Quote]Look at me, [Comma]”[Close Quote] said Bagheera.[Period] And Mowgli looked at him steadily between the eyes.[Period] The big panther turned his head away in half a minute.[Period] [New Line]

“[Open Quote]That is why, [Comma]”[Close Quote] he said,[Comma] shifting his paw on the leaves.[Period] “[Open Quote]Not even I can look thee between the eyes,[Comma] and I was born among men,[Comma] and I love thee,[Comma] [Cap]Little [Cap]Brother.[Period] The others they hate thee because their eyes cannot meet thine;[Semicolon] because thou art wise;[Semicolon] because thou hast pulled out thorns from their feet—[Dash]because thou art a man. [Period]”[Close Quote] [New Line]

“[Open Quote]I did not know these things, [Comma]”[Close Quote] said Mowgli sullenly,[Comma] and he frowned under his heavy black eyebrows.
